How to manage the integration of your foreign employees?

With the labour shortage, many companies are looking to fill their positions by recruiting from abroad.

Whether it be seasonal workers or qualified professionals, welcoming and integrating these employees can be delicate and complex. Fortunately, MPEX brings a unique approach to managing the employment of these newcomers.

What is your role in integrating a new employee?

As a human resources manager, it is your responsibility to provide the new employee with all the necessary information relevant to his or her new role. A successful integration will allow the new employee to be well established and to flourish within your team.

In the case of a newcomer, integration into your organization is essential. The impressions he or she will have of the work environment, his or her colleagues and the authority figures to whom they will have to adapt to are formed very early on. These impressions influence the employee’s contribution to the work environment, their attitudes, behaviours and ultimately their decision to stay in your organization.

Here are some things to consider for your next integration:

    1. Demonstrate that their arrival is appreciated and expected.

    • Contact your new employee to confirm the date and time of the arrival.
    • Organize their workstation and the safety features they will need to perform their duties in advance.
    • Anticipate the tasks you will assign to them on their first day.

    2. Coach and support them through the process.

    • Provide them with a copy of their employment contract/letter of agreement and their job description.
    • Inform them of the termination and resignation procedures.
    • Schedule a meeting with the employee's immediate supervisor as soon as possible.

    3.  Begin training immediately. Supervise them.

    • In order for them to be effective in their position, you must train them in your work methods.
    • According to Emploi-Québec, "on-the-job training is a set of activities aimed at acquiring, in a work situation, knowledge, skills and attitudes related to the performance of tasks specific to a given job. These are situations where the performance of tasks assigned to an employee requires specific learning, of a determined duration".
